Oberammergau Passion Play in Germany 1990

In 1990. my son Martin (then 10 years old) traveled solo (!) to meet me in at the airport in Munich, Germany so that we could attend the spectacle of the once-per-decade Oberammergau Passion Play and see some other sights.

Oberammergau itself is a lovely village.

For the uninitiated, the passion play at Oberammergaur is is a full stage production that runs from 2.30pm until 10.30pm (with an intermission, of course!) and charts the story of Christ's life, suffering and resurrection, performed entirely by locals of the charming village.

the director (in blue jeans) is on the left, making corrections to the staging....  thanks to YouTube for a good documentary on this event!   See it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woVOraMCVgs

The Passion Play first took place in the year of 1633 and its origin story is a captivating one. The Plague had descended upon the residents of Oberammergau and they made a solemn vow to God that if, by any chance, they were spared this disease's grisly fate, they would act out the life and death of Christ in its entirety every ten years. Miraculously, no other lives were taken and so the Passion Play began being produced.

We enjoyed the festivities at Oktoberfest in Munich, and also visited the famous castle Neuschwanstein.
